Trellis, Hero Dog

Golden Retriever Trellis summoned help -- almost certainly saving the life of an elderly neighbor. He was named "Merck Hero Dog" of the year.

Trellis, also known as Woodmyers' Felonious Assault CD, WC passed away quietly and with dignity in our arms and with the kind and compassionate help of his veterinarian, Laurie Culbert on September 4, 2001, at age 9. He was born at Guiding Eyes for the Blind in New York State and was the much loved and cherished pet and companion of Ann, Tom and very young Jack Burns. In his lifetime, Trellis obtained his Working Certificate (W.C.) and his Companion Dog (C.D.) titles. In 1996 he obtained the title "HERO" when he saved an 89 year-old man from exposure and almost certain death during a snowstorm. For that feat, he received Merck's "Hero with a Heart" award presented by June Lockhart and Lassie. Trellis leaves behind many happy and healthy puppies, some of whom work for the disabled as Canine Companions and all of which are very much loved by their human companions. But these accomplishments pale in comparison to his most important job, that of being the loving, kind, dignified and gracious soul who so freely gave his heart and love to all those who knew him. We will miss him terribly. Sleep well my friend.
